21 Weeks Pregnant

Voila! It’s the start of the second half of your pregnancy, time for a celebration dinner!

How’s the baby coming on?

Rapid eye movement

By now the rate of growth of your baby will be slowing down compared to the past few weeks. You might as well call it the start of the “fine-tuning” phase. One significant development of this week though, is Rapid Eye Movement (REM) in your baby’s cycle of sleep.

The skin is red, getting translucent but visibly wrinkly, which is actually in preparation for more fat to be formed under the skin in the coming weeks. If you have twins or triplets, by this time they will begin kicking each other. But don’t worry, there is a very elastic and strong system separating them so they’re not capable of damaging each other just yet.

The baby at this stage will weigh approximately 370 grams and will be settling down into the position that it is in when delivered, once this second trimester is over.

Changes inside the Mommy

Swelling in their ankles

Your uterus is now raised to about half an inch above your belly button. You should gain about 10-15 pounds of weight during this week, though it should come from a healthy diet and not from an excess of chocolates, fast food and other fatty and unhealthy choices of food. During this week some mothers also experience a swelling in their ankles and feet. If this turns out to be the case with you, don’t worry. Drink lots of water and keep your feet elevated. This should ease the problem in due course.

Daddy needs to?

If you want a relaxing holiday with your partner, with her consent of course, this may be the perfect time to set off for it. She is in high spirits due to being energetic. She is feeling a lot better compared to her first trimester, and she’s not too heavy to move around yet. It is strongly recommended that you take your doctor’s consent before making such a plan to eliminate any unnecessary risks.
